What choices will you make today to take total responsibility for your commitment? How can you become single-minded in your efforts? What truths do you need to embrace to fortify your commitment to do what’s right even when you don’t feel like it?

DAY

The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower becomes the lender’s slave.

SOLOMON

When I was studying for the ministry in 1985, I realized I was choosing a profession where I would not make a lot of money. I didn’t mind that because I knew I would be fulfilling what I believed I was called to do. But I also recognized that when a person has no money, he has few options. So Margaret and I made one of our Daily Dozen decisions: We will sacrifice today so that we can have options tomorrow. From then on, we’ve determined to live by this financial formula: 10 percent to church/charity, 10 percent to investments, and 80 percent to living expenses. When our investments have made money, we’ve rolled the profits over into other investments. Over time our money has been building, and we’ve enjoyed more options.

The bottom line about money is that it is nothing but a tool. It is good for helping one achieve goals, but the goal of getting money for its own sake is ultimately hollow. Money won’t make you happy, but owing money is sure to make you miserable. If you desire to have options, make your finances one of your daily priorities.
